MOBILITY HOUSE IN KUNGSBÄCK

The city architect of Gävle, Brita Bugge:

"The building has a beautiful elaborate design with its own character. The load-bearing construction with diagonal wooden columns and a slightly floating roof gives a modern expression that suits the function well. Using a natural material, such as wood, gives warmth and comfort to the facility. The possibility of using the roof for sports and recreation has been taken advantage of well. Other positive features are the solar cells and plant beds on top of the roof .”

We want to create a central hub full of energy and innovation in the new Teknikparken district and for the whole of Eastern Kungsbäck. The new mobility hub with its central location in Teknikparken will become a profile building to identify with and feel proud of - a power bank for the area at the forefront of technology and the sharing economy.

The design is based on the conditions that the facade must be permeable and at the same time resist wind, water and snow. Therefore, the roof has been given a substantial but tasteful eaves that protects the facade and the pedestrians below. The roof slopes inwards to avoid lacerations and icicles and at the same time provides good conditions for effectively delaying the rainwater with large plant beds and water ponds on the roof. The plant beds also reappear in the street level, which also contributes to biological diversity. The facade material consists of sine-corrugated sheets with three different designs. All three discs are transparent but have different amounts of transparency and degree of openness through perforation and mesh structure. It provides variety in the cityscape that breaks down the size of the building. The construction in cross-glued wood gives the house a graphic quality with a warm and durable surface on the inside, where the outermost layer with slanting beams gives the house a significant pattern. The idea is based on working with the constructive parts of the building in order to rationally create architectural qualities.

It has been of the outmost importance to us that the building is experienced as varied, alive and bright. We have designed the mobility house as a building without back sides, which faces both the street space and nature, as well as the adjacent residential areas to avoid unsafe sections. In the evening, the lighting in the building creates a warm interior glow that makes the house shine like a lantern in the area. Spiral stairs and the internal wooden construction form – together with the movements in the house – beautiful silhouettes behind the perforated surfaces where you can always sense the inside. The building gets a clear and stable expression at the same time, where the transparency creates a lightness in the design and readability in the construction.

To ensure that the hub will be alive throughout the day, we intend to have a range of activities with sports and an outdoor gym on the roof. The important thing is that it becomes a place for meetings between people that enables the journey to continue and also invites to stay. With the project, we want to strengthen the sharing economy and circular flows, where both the bike and car pool as well as the open bike workshop have a prominent place in the construction. Charging stations as well as vegetation and solar panels on the building's roof also promote ecological sustainability. The street space is urban but has many trees, green areas, seating and bicycle parking.
